Day 9 // DFI

 Woah! What a morning!

First of all, I would like to thank the bubble coaches for the support over the past 9 weeks, the lovely ladies in my bubble group and the team from Manaiakalani!

I have learnt so much being on this course! I am looking forward to the new learning I will be doing as well as using my new knowledge to support others at my school.

I enjoyed completing the exam today and it is a great way to reflect and see if you retained any of the learning over the past 9 weeks of this course.

Fingers crossed I passed! 🤞

Have a lovely weekend! 🌞🌅🌻

Back to Teach my class now 😀😀

Day 8: DFI - Computational Thinking

Day 8: DFI - Computational Thinking

I have had a rollercoaster week! Only being in class for 2 days and getting some upsetting news in my personal life had me feeling very overwhelmed.

Empowered:

This really hit me hard for myself. This was my life growing up as a child. As an adult it was and has been hard breaking the cycle and managing everything. I could go on but however, it is what drives me to be a better person, teacher and a mother!

When I was studying, we had a rangahau project for 2 years. I focused on Poverty in our low decile schools in Tairawhiti and how our schools are supporting their students and whanau. One thing for me is that I am passionate about children who are from those backgrounds. I was one of those children.

With this session I found that, Manaiakalani kaupapa of empowerment is important. I would love to be a pilot class for manaiakalani next year within my school.

The greatest joy comes from Empowering students to… be life long learners.

Chalk n Talk - Digital Fluency, Digital Technologies and Curriculum.

Manaiakalani - empowering our teachers and learners together. Progression outcomes are a little different to the NZC learning progression outcomes.

What each part of the digital curriculum is broken down into.

I enjoyed reading and looking through this document and the language they have used. It is a great read and it is explained in student speak. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SCSXbLK0LNMJIeJZRu0FKowHI-2FDpw59RcVK0jCYSE/edit

I will look at this site for use in my class:

https://csunplugged.org/en/topics/

Explore: Coding

I have had fun exploring and looking at the different coding websites we can use in our classes. I found that the minecraft coding from Code.org was fun and seems easy to use. I might try this out with my class as I am lucky to have 1 to 1 device in my class.

Flappy bird was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed it. This is a fun game and I think my students would love to explore Code.org.

My favourite so far is using scratch online on my laptop. Here is a screenshot of what I was playing around with.

I created a video of myself explaining how I made the above picture.

Creating with Code:

It was great to get a deeper understanding of how to work pixel art and coding on google sheets! When I was in lockdown I used one task that was created by Manaiakalani and my students loved it! I then created a second pixel art challenge for my students.

I can’t wait to show my students how to code by using pixel art! I think I will start with something simple like their name then moving on to objects.

Below is a screenshot of what I did with my time with Phil.

Then I created a coding picture task.

CS unplugged at home tasks are great for unplugged tasks.

To carry the learning from using google sheets to creating their image and creating a moving GIF on https://www.piskelapp.com/

My knowledge from the start of DFI to where I am now has developed a lot! I now feel like I am more confident with google and how to use these tools online with my class.

I am looking forward to sitting the Exam and would happily do the DFI again!!

Day 7: DFI // Devices

 Day 7: DFI // Devices

What a full on week it has been with the change in the Covid levels and heading back to school. It was great to see my students again and showed them our class site and my professional blog.

Connecting with Manaiakalani - Ubiquitous

As stated in the above picture. Having the availability for your students to be able to connect with their learning outside of the school time frame. They are able to show whanau what they are learning through their class site.

Thinking about how I set my students ready for their learning when I was attending my DFi course? At our school, the relievers have their own programmes that they run.

Deep Dive - Cybersmart

Empowering our students to be confident online.

Making sure to model Positive language and behaviours with your students. Making sure to be positive, thoughtful and helpful. This links to the photo of how you comment on blogs. - That Kerry shared.

Hapara Hot Tip #6

I am going to have a look at the workspaces on Hapara and see how I can use it within my class.

Chalk ‘n’ Talk - Screen castify

I love using Screen castify when we were in lockdown (both lockdowns) doing rewindable learning to help troubleshoot problems my students were having as well as walking through instructions with what I want my students to do.

Exploring on the Ipads was great! I will definitely use this with one of my students. The app Explain everything was easy to use and I think my students would really enjoy using this tool.

Getting Creative:

I had fun creating my smart footprint and how I can use the app to explain everything for how I can use it for one of my students in my class.

I am planning on showing this to his teacher aide and how it could support her.

Below is an image of what I created in this session.

One Teacher shared that in her school one teacher gets the kids to take pictures of their writing then reading it allowed on this app. I think I will be using this with my students.

Reflecting on the Kaupapa of the Manaiakalani Programme in light of COVID 19 , whether you did Lockdown: Season 1 or Seasons 2/3/4, and YOUR readiness for ubiquitous learning...

What are you proud of?

  • I am proud of how I was able to set learning for my students with the use of the google apps that I have learnt so far! I was able to set my site up to be easy for my students and how they see everything.

What do you regret?

  • Not having a stronger internet connection and having to use my hotspotting.

What have you taken forward into the ‘new’ era of schooling?

  • Use of my class site more in the classroom, so my students are able to use it if we ever go into lockdown again.

All in all it was a great day and I now have some ideas on how I can sort one or even more of my students in my class.

Kia pai to ra!

DFI // Day 6 // Enabling Access

  DFI // Day 6 // Enabling Access

Using Jamboard within my google meets to build connections with my tamariki. This has been really engaging and has been helpful with my students. Having to create some rewindable learning videos for my students to show them how to do something has helped some of my tamariki.

Managing working from home, home schooling my 6year old and house work has gotten better this week as I get into a rythym of things.

Learn:

Connected:

Chalk ‘n’ Talk

Having rewindable learning on my site, having personalised learning and having a visual aspect to your site.

My next intention for my class site is to add my planning so my tamariki and whanau can see what is going to happen that week and when.

If you have a class site and everything is on there you can use it in your teaching registration. All you need to do is give them the url for your site.

It is best to plan your site beforehand to help when you are creating your site. Keep the font consistent throughout the site.

As the picture states.

I need to learn to hide pages so then you will always have it there when you need it.

When making your class site you need to have in the back of your mind that your students need to be able to navigate the site easily.

DFI: Day 5 - Collaborate

Day 5: Collaborate:

What a week it has been! Lockdown, teaching from home (my own class and 6yr old), and managing the household! Thank you DFI for the many skills you have taught me so far! It has been helpful!

It was great to reconnect with my bubble group this morning. I feel like I belong to a great group of teachers.

Visible Kaupapa

I found this Kaupapa really helpful. Making the learning journey visible so that the students are able to see where they are going next and what they will need to do. This learning journey will support my students to see what they are doing and they are able to talk about what they are doing and where they need to be. Make sure the students are able to get access to the learning outcomes and their aim.

Having the learning journey on your site will help you to have everything in one place. Every student is able to access the site, timetable, learning and anything else they need on the site.

Hapara is a great tool for teachers within the classroom and in lockdown. I have been able to use it in my google meets this week.

One feedback I have about google sites is: If you consistently show the google site children at any age can navigate it. My daughter is 6 yrs old and can Navigate through her class site. She knows where everything is and what she needs to do. She has learning difficulties but having access to her google site really has supported her learning. (Thanks Koka Beth!!!)

Deep Dive:

Multi Modal is great to have within our sites to support our students.

Are priority goals for the Manaiakalani programme giving students the power to navigate their learning. When setting up your site you kind of need to sell the learning. How will you display your google site?

You are able to personalize your site to support the learning on our google sites.

Keep in mind↑

The sharing hub:

Exploring other site ideas for how they display multi modal. It is amazing how much information children need. Having everything available to them would be helpful. Having each task explaining and what type of learning they will be doing. Everything is written and a video has been made by the teacher.

Here are links to some multi modal sites:

https://sites.google.com/yaldhurst.school.nz/te-mahuri--nz-dinosaurs/home

https://sites.google.com/ptengland.school.nz/science-in-our-world/living-things?authuser=0

Google Sites:

My team leader showed me how to make sure the sharing settings are open to anyone with the link.

It is important to plan your site before you set it up! There should not be more than 2 clicks to get to student mahi.

With an image or slide (to resize) uncrop it.

Explore:

Multi-Modal Database

Looking at the different sites on the database is amazing, you are able to gain ideas and what you would like to use on your site. I never knew about Jamboard on Google. This is something I am going to have a look at!

I like how some teachers have their planning on their site as well.

Jamboard:

Sticky Notes

Multiple people can edit and move things around.

Thanks Cheryl for showing me how to use Jamboard. I had no idea it existed.

Creating our own Site using the resources we have found:

Woah, there was some great learning happening. Learning how to create a site and how to set it up in a multi-modal space. I would love to learn about the ‘Learn, create, share’ model and how I can use it in my teaching.

Below is a link to the site I created today.

Have a great weekend and Keep safe!!

Day 4: Dealing with Data // DFI

Day 4: Dealing with Data // DFI

DFI at home has been a new experience for myself as I’ve had to hotspot my data to get internet! Having to pop into school at a selected time to get resources and having to Hotspot and listen to our hui as I drove to and from school!

Share -

Sharing has been around since the beginning of time. We share stories, successes and failures, as well as connecting with other people.

Share on a much greater level. Sharing their learning through their blog, gives them a purpose to complete their mahi.

It is highly impactful for students to get feedback from people who are not from their class or friend group. This can be powerful and how motivating it can be for your learners.

Toolkits - Online

Chalk ‘n’ Talk - Google Forms

What is great about google forms is that you can use it for a lot of different purposes. Student voice would be great to use google forms for. It gives our students a free platform for them to express themselves in an open manner without sharing their name.

Great tips to use when creating a form for students to complete.

Using Quiz mode can help with assessment. Make sure to have the lock mode on too.

Below is the link to the google form I created today. It is based around questions for my class whanau, based around distance learning if we will have to go into online distance learning again.

Google Maps -

Deep Dive - Google Sheets -

There are many different functions in google sheets. Shortcuts on how to autofill your cells. I am looking forward to having a play with what we have been learning today. I can’t wait to use google sheets for my data.

More formats - bottom of the tool/format tab.

Chalk ‘n’ Talk - Sheets on Speed.

This is practice for the exam.

Tips about Sheet’s that I found useful

  • Maths - Stats use google sheets for graphs. It will then become a live graph and students can then see if the data is correct or not.

  • Data tab sort A - Z or Z - A

  • Protect range - to set current cells for only one student to view. Select cells then add permissions.

  • You can add checkboxes.

  • Use Sheets to enter your writing e-asttle to mark your students' scores.

Create: Making meaning of content: Analysing data from a student's blog.

Today we looked at Analysising data from a students blog post. We had to Create a table that displayed each each, month and amount of blog posts that were posted.
Then we had to create a chart to display the data. I choose to do a monthly overview and a year overview.

I also created something a little similar to what Mele did.

Share: Embed and Rewind content

I found this quick tip that Kerry shared very vaild. I have used this before and found that it is easier to write a one word comment however, it may not be effective for students. I think I will be using this in my self, and peer share where they have to give feedback.

Day 3: Media // DFI

 Day 3: Media // DFI

Reflection from Day 2 learning in class:

One thing that was on top for myself and using the learning I’ve learnt this week is…

My students were able to pin two tabs that we use often in class. They were buzzing that when they reopened google chrome there tabs were still there.

Using the dashboard to view and manage students files via the dashboard tab. You can group your students to be able to share files with a select group of students. If you need to keep track of a student you can drag their tile to the top, to keep a track with what they are doing.

Connecting with Manaiakalani - Create

Create -

I really liked the statement from the Lifelong Kindergarten group. I really enjoy learning through play/doing within schools.

This slide spoke to me alot! I love hands-on learning. Whether it is gardening, building, using papatuanuku and being a kaitiaki for her. I try to involve my students in what learning they would like to do. Creativity involved in the classrooms. Getting everyone involved and sharing their ideas and thoughts.

https://youtu.be/c1bPAWEfmWY

When we create we use our whole body.

From the Create presentation, I have found that a lot of the kaupapa that was spoken about is the type of learning that I like to do in my class. Creating is giving students purpose. Making connections is important for teaching, learning, for our students and whanau, and is a big part of my culture. My people believed that making connections is important when getting to know people. Or in other words whakawhanaungatanga.

Chalk and Talk

Youtube:

Great new learning. On how to create a youtube channel and how to make playlists. How you can create playlists of videos that students can view and is helpful for students to use in their learning.

If you click share you can share it straight to your blog.

Kerry gave me some great advice to keep my personal playlist to be in my personal email and my school email to be for playlists I’ll use in school.

Deep dive: Media.

There is so much that can be said within a few minutes within a video. It can be captivating, motivational and moving for our students.

https://sites.google.com/ptengland.school.nz/movie-making-moran/home

Links to things that you can do with google drawing. Make sure to change the setting for the link so anyone with this link can access your image.

- I like this aspect of google drawings to put your image into a shape! I think I might teach my students this next week!

I really enjoyed creating this in google drawings.

Chalk N Talk:

Google Slides:

There is a lot of things you can do on Google Slides, I am thinking about exploring google slides and using this within my class.

I am going to use one of the ideas from the create section of the slides shared with us. To build into my literacy programme.

Levelling up session:

Working with Google Drawing and exploring more of its functions.

Ctrl + D = duplicate a shape to create a flowchart or GO.

All of the google drawings tools work the same for google  slides.

Double click in your shape and you will be able to write in the shape without adding a text box.

If you want to change the colour of your shape and want patterns or lines of different colours you click on gradient then linear and then you can change the angle and direction of the lines/colours.

Creating with Google Slides: Kiwaha - Makaore

I learnt a lot within this space of learning.

I learnt the following:

  • Put a picture in the background. - Ctrl+Shift+Down Arrow.

  • To bring it to the front you will then do: Ctrl+Shift+Up Arrow.

  • How to publish my slides to the web then getting the code to embed it to my blog!

Nga mihi Makaore!!!
